Even if Alsace is the only region where the AOC names claim names of varietals, it is one of the French wine-producing regions pioneers in the terroirs’influence’s research. Subject to a septentrional climate, Alsace is a real patchwork of soils and sub-soils.
A note of history: the Alsatian vineyards result from a huge cataclysm: the collapse (50 million years ago) of a footbridge putting on the Black Forest in Vosges. The collapse of this old massif gives today this configuration to the Alsatian vineyards landscape: a plain crossed by a river (the Rhine), surmounted on the West by sub-Vosges hills (the main part of the Alsatian vineyards where to find Kientzheim-Kaysersberg) and the edges of the Vosges mountains.
The vine-growers of Cave de Kientzheim have always worked their vineyards by hand, which is a crucial factor in producing well-balanced top-quality wines.
